The Economic Complexity Index (ECI) is a measure of the relative knowledge intensity of an economy. Australia scores well in research (#3), technology (#4) and software (#10) but at #79 (out of 130 countries) on trade, it is keeping the wrong sort of company in the league tables of export complexity - the uncomfortable truth behind the mining boom’s legacy.
